THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD
The Hubble telescope helps us see deep space so we can better understand how big the universe is, how old it is, and how it is expanding. Hubble also sees new stars forming from gas and debris clouds that are millions of miles across. They are swirling and being pulled inward by gravity.
Studying the chemistry of the universe reveals God’s further consideration for us. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sodium and potassium are essential for life. Protons and neutrons need the exact density for the lightest element, hydrogen, to fuse and produce these heavier ones. It is these denser elements that create nuclear fusion or fire for stars. If the protons’ and neutrons’ density is too low, stars cannot ignite and there would be no life. If their density was just a bit higher, all the hydrogen would fuse into elements heavier than iron and life would not exist.
The intensity of these elements must be exact. For example, life is carbon based. Without it we could not exist, but just a bit too much is a poison, such as carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. God has finely tuned the elements so we might live.
In recent years, scientists began to understand dark matter. They say the things we cannot see, far outweigh the things we can see. Between the stars, planets and asteroids, the universe is dark and seemingly empty. It is dark but not empty. The volume and weight of the tiny particles that cannot be seen, add up to be far greater than all the stars, galaxies and planets we can see, and that dark matter has density.
It is like the biomass of ants on earth. They far outweigh the combined mass of all other living things. The ants, under the ground, that we do not see, weigh more than all elephants, whales, and other creatures combined. Dark matter is like that.
Planets, stars and other visible objects make up only 5% of cosmic density, while dark energy and dark matter make up 95% of cosmic density.
Everything that has mass and density has a gravitational pull. Gravity pulls objects toward one another while dark energy, found between the planets and stars, along with centrifugal force, pushes everything outward. The balance between the pushing and the pulling keeps solar systems, galaxies, asteroid belts and dark matter from colliding. Without this balance, solar systems and galaxies smash into one another. Galaxies that are stable spin smoothly in organized spirals, influenced by just the right pressure of pushing and pulling.
God put earth in the perfect place. Our Milky Way Galaxy is a beautiful spiral; that is why earth is stable. It’s as if God holds us in the palm of His hand. He designed and created the universe, the world, the nations and all of us, for His eternal purpose.
“God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’” (Acts 17:27-28 NIV)
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which you have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? (Psalm 8:3-4 NKJV)
