GOD'S CHRISTMAS BLESSING
Christmas is about God’s government coming to earth. From before the foundation of the world, God designed a future kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. God is love, and His righteousness, peace, and joy are exactly what His love brings. This is the essence of His government, and every person has the opportunity to embrace it. Who would not want to live in righteousness, peace, and joy? Christmas morning, 2000 years ago, revealed the light of life to a darkened world. Behold, Jesus the Messiah: the Son of God, the Savior of the World, the Lord of Heaven, the King of Kings. He came as a baby, pure and beautiful, and the revelation of His glory has grown with every passing day. Our ultimate hope lies in one powerful truth: the government of the earth and the universe is on His shoulders.
MORE THAN A CHILD IS BORN
The revelation of His coming kingdom was revealed to many prophets, but the clearest announcement came to us from Isaiah about 2,750 years ago. He said, “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this” (Isa. 9:6-7).
Packed tightly in these 2 verses are volumes of information about His coming, His purpose, His kingdom, His authority, His character, His resolve, His positioning with Israel, His forever rule, His divinity, His supremacy, and His personal love and care for each of us. This is absolutely amazing.
He is much more than a beautiful baby. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Through Him, all things in the universe hold together. He is God, yet He is so very personal to everyone He receives. He is our Child, our Son, our Father, our Prince, our Counselor, and our Mighty God. It is hard to put these 2 extremes together; the God who is over all and above all, is also dynamically intimate and personal with us.
As we take a closer look at these verses we see different themes. We can divide the themes into categories of revelation. They are: 1. The Baby, 2. His Government, 3. His Righteousness, 4. His Eternal Kingdom, 5. His Identity with Israel, 6. His Care for His Children, 7. The Almighty’s Zeal.
Here are a few realities that highlight each of these themes:
1. The Baby
God’s identification with us is astonishing. He could not be more personal and intimate with us than by becoming a baby and growing from a sperm and egg inside the womb of a young virgin. No part of our journey is overlooked or unimportant. No shortcuts were taken as God took on a human form. The vulnerable gestation and birth of Jesus was the ultimate step of identification with each of us. His Word says, He was born and given to the world as our Child. He belongs to us. He is our Son.
2. His Government
Jesus was born to rule the world. The endgame of God’s plan is a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy, and that can only happen if the government rests of His shoulders. He alone is good and loving and everyone else falls short of the mark. Jesus continues to rule the universe, but He will specifically set up His government on the earth. All governments will come under His, and He will rule with a rod of iron and His people will rejoice when He sits on the throne and rules over the nations (see Isaiah 2:2-6).
3. His Righteousness
God’s nature is holy and holiness depicts His goodness and righteousness (His right ways). No person will see God the Father until they are holy. Scripture says, without holiness no man shall see God. When Jesus reigns on the earth, we will finally see God face to face. Then His kingdom will be established and upheld with justice and righteousness. The Lord will make everything new. Because righteousness will prevail, there will be no more sickness, crying, or pain.
4. His Eternal Kingdom
Scripture says that Christ’s government and His peace will always increase and never come to an end; it is eternal. For us, it seems a long time coming, but God is not slow or late. He does everything with perfect timing. His plan will demonstrate His longsuffering, His compassion, His wisdom, His fairness, His justice, and His love. In His timing He will bring all of these dynamics together. He will have a people who love Him, and then He will present to us a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. When we reach this perfection it will last forever.
5. His Identity with Israel
God calls the Jews His chosen people and He put them in the Promised Land. From the beginning He chose them to welcome and serve the people of the world who will come to Jerusalem. He has worked with them from the days of Abraham, giving them the Scriptures and using them as examples of faith. Through Christ, they have an eternal place of priority in God’s future kingdom. Scripture says that Jesus will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom forever. Even now, in heaven, Jesus is called, the Lion from the tribe of Judah and the root of David; He retains His Jewish identity.
6. His Care for His Children
Four different names describe the Lord’s love and care toward us. He is our Wonderful Counselor, our Everlasting Father, our Prince of Peace, and our Mighty God. What God would be a personal counselor, a forever father, and a sustainer of our peace? The love and care that Jesus gives through His Holy Spirit is beyond explanation. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. When everyone else forsakes you, the Lord is ready to take you up.
7. The Almighty’s Zeal
God promises that His plans for us and His kingdom will one day be completed. He says that the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. There is no stronger force in the universe than the zeal of the Lord.
At this time of year, we unwrap Christmas gifts that come and go, but God’s Christmas gift for us is His Son, and He is eternal. The Lord Jesus is everything we need for all eternity. This Babe in the manger is the life of the world. He is the Light for revelation to the Gentiles and He is the Glory of God’s chosen people Israel.
